Chevrolet SRV review - Engine and Transmission |
When we were on our way to drive this car, we were looking forward to the spirit of the fiat palio 1.6 resting behind the now formidable Chevrolet badge. The expectations from this car were high, to say the least about it. We were hoping for something that would bite our heads off and chew them out with anger. But, we were disappointed. The numbers on the paper don't quite speak up on the road. The motor although not coarse or noisy is just a bit of a let down. The VGIS system which is also found on the Chevrolet aveo 1.6 is primarily aimed at varying the air inlet geometry in order to boost fuel economy by improving the mid-range torque. Somehow, I don't see the point if fuel economy becomes a concern in a car that is to be bought by people craving for power! The motor is still good for the regular round abouts and the occasional outburst of rage from your right foot; but somehow the punch was lacking. It just didn't feel like my right foot was the only thing holding 100 powerful American(or rather Korean) horses back.
The transmission on the Chevrolet SRV is the standard H pattern 5 speed manual with 5 forward and 1 reverse gear. It also incorporates the safety feature that requires you to pull a notch on the gear lever to engage reverse. The clutch on the SRV felt unbelievably soft. The gearbox has very long throw and each gear engages with an uncanny bite that can be annoying. This occurs mainly at high engine revs, but when operating at low 2000rpm and so on, there aren't any worries to report.
This motor is particularly suited for those long, ultra fast cruises; 130+ kmph territory I mean. Plant the 5 speed manual in 5'th and just let the engine tick away to watch the miles fly by. The engine will rev all the way to 6500rpm and its fun taking it there. But, as we said earlier; don't expect a shove in the back you may find in cars like theSkoda octavia RS. The acceleration is smooth and without any flat spots.
Review on the Design and interiors and the Ride, handling and Verdict of the SRV.
