Hyundai santro xing review; engine and transmission |
engine and Transmission
The santro recently got the eRLX upgrade to its zippy 4 cylinder 1086cc 3 valves per cylinder engine. This engine is different from its competition as it runs the 3 valves per cylinder layout which uses 2 exhaust and 1 inlet valve, thus allowing for optimising both low end grunt and top end power. This layout makes the santro engine very tractable in the city and cruising along congested suburbun roads is best achieved in 2'nd gear which balances power and efficiency. The motor pulls very strongly from as low as 800rpm but the engine does become a bit gruff as you reach the top of the rev band and the Wagon R is bit better when it comes to the top of the rev band as the santro engine does run out of torque higher up.
The santro should be able to churn out better mileage figures around town when compared to its competition thanks to the excellent gearing and excellent low down grunt. You get a nice intake sound whenever you step on the throttle but the revs do die down quickly. The Multi port fuel injected engine is very refined and the noise/vibration is very well insulated from the cabin. At the top of the rev band however, there is a nice purr which does make this car sound purposeful and reassuring.
The clear winner in terms of satisfaction is in fact the transmission that i not the least bit notchy and the short throw makes it a delight to use. The clutch is also very soft and nice to use. No complaints really as far as the engine and transmission goes and a healthy mileage of 14-16kmpl around Town and 17-19kmpl on the highway are easily achievable. If one is able to gather enough courage, 150kph is also achievable!
